Announcing Changing Faces and New Faces

Changing Faces & New Faces

The Hoffman Board of Directors thanks Toni Zenker-Greening for picking up the paintbrush (so to speak) for the HCA Visual Arts program in 2017 and creating so vividly for six years. Toni has invested untold hours into significantly developing participation, quality of instruction, and program financial contribution to the Hoffman.

Over the past six years, Toni found visual arts teachers along the north Oregon coast and attracted teachers from Portland, Eugene, and beyond. Many instructors were able to illustrate their techniques and inspire visitors with displays of their art in our Gallery.

Given the challenge of Covid in 2020 and 2021, Toni, with help from Sharon Gibson, jumped into learning and implementing the online ZOOM tool and our Thinkific teaching platform to seamlessly continue classes. For many people in our community sequestered from travel, family and friends, this link to connection and creativity was a lifeline.

We thank Toni for her remarkable contribution and wish her the very best!

To replace Toni, we welcome new Visual Arts program co-leads Bonnie Laing-Malcolmson and Brian Postle. Bonnie most recently retired as the Harold and Arlene Schnitzer Curator of Northwest art at Portland Art Museum. She brings more than 30 years of experience in Arts Education to her volunteer role. Having served for ten years as the President of the Oregon College of Art and Craft, Bonnie is well versed in arts education. Brian recently retired as a Clinical Trial Researcher. A long-time lover of the arts, Brian will apply his robust organizational, management, and technical skills to helping the Visual Arts program thrive.

There are changes in our Gallery, too. Replacing Mary Roberts as Gallery manager, artist Rae Mahaffey takes a new volunteer position as Curator for the Gallery—working closely with artists to plan for their exhibits. Rae has been a professional artist for over 40 years, operated a fine arts printing company with her husband Master Printmaker Mark Mahaffey, and has consulted with fine arts galleries to improve their practices. Pete McDonnell also joins the team as Gallery Coordinator. After retiring, Pete started at Hoffman as the gallery registrar and has quickly become crucial to the program. He is drawn to crafts, particularly fiber arts, with his main focus being kumihimo (traditional Japanese braid making). Rae and Pete work with Marcia Silver, Host Coordinator, and India Downes-LeGuin, Executive Director, to manage all Gallery operations.
