Hoffman Center Offers
Advanced Encaustic Painting Collage

During this one-day encaustic painting workshop participants will learn how to collage different materials with encaustic wax by fusing multiple layers with a ‘heat gun’ or ‘torch’ to add depth to pieces. Using pan pastels and oil bars, everyone will create their own work of art and leave the workshop with one or two finished pieces.

Kalestiantz describes the pliability of wax as a medium both forgiving and rewarding. You can paint, sculpt, do 3-D work, incorporate numerous materials such as paper, organic materials, oils, graphite, India ink, pan pastels, photographs, fabric, rust, just to name a few.

Manuela Kalestiantz earned a BFA in painting and Sculpting at the Superior Academy of Fine Arts in Lisbon, Portugal. She has been working with encaustic for the last ten years. She says she fell in love with the medium once she was introduced to it.  She is fascinated with negative space and relief and finds encaustic is an opportunity to use both by carving, sculpting and incorporating other materials into her art. She says: “I want my work to rise up from the panel and occupy a space closer to the viewer, promote a conversation, and a sensory journey.” She wants the viewer to touch and engage with it, by feeling the sensuality and energy of the wax in each piece.

Kalestiantz is a member of International Encaustic Artists, and Treasurer of International Encaustic Artists organization, President of the IEA Oregon Chapter, and Art Director at MilePost5 ‘The Lofts Gallery.’ She has led workshops at The Ryan Gallery, MilePost 5, Denizen Gallery, Marylhurst Museum of Art, and Oregon Society of Artists. She has exhibited her art in many galleries and shows in Oregon including Oregon Society of Artists, MilePost 5, Bend Art Center, The Emerald Art Center in Eugene, West Linn Library, Lake Oswego Festival of the Arts, and The Big Five Hundred with Chris Haberman.
