In With The New: Creating A Joyful Garden

The soil was abysmal at Linda Cochran’s new subdivision home. The existing plants were contractor specials; they had to go. The back of her Port Ludlow, WA. property sloped steeply into woodland that did not beckon. After so many years in a coastal Northwest climate, she was done gardening in shade.

Instead, Linda Cochran envisioned a treeless front garden shimmering with drought-tolerant, deer-resistant, pollinator-friendly plants. She wanted a boisterous, natural-looking garden that allowed for surprise and happenstance, with self-seeding NW natives popping up among South African bulbs and sculptural Mexican palms.

And because Linda Cochran is one of the most accomplished, resourceful and plant-mad people in the Pacific Northwest, she did it. She created exactly what she had in her mind’s eye. And guess what? She took notes.

In With The New: Creating a Joyful Garden is the story of Linda Cochran’s Port Ludlow garden, now five years old. It’s also a story of letting go and moving on. Linda’s previous garden on Bainbridge Island, Froggy Bottom, was widely considered as one of the country’s finest, a botanical gem that wooed plant worshippers from around the world.

We invite you to join program host Ketzel Levine and guest speaker Linda Cochran on a winter solstice journey into the delicious possibilities of 2022: new plants, color combinations and approaches to design. Let the dreaming begin!
