The ASPIRE Program, one local opportunity for connecting
multi-generations, is the subject of a presentation and discussion for
the Art of Aging/of Dying series.

Hoffman Center Art of Aging Series will host a presentation by Margaret Whiting and discussion on August 8, from 3PM to 5PM on the topic of connecting multi-generations locally, with one specific opportunity, the ASPIRE program at Neah-Kah-Nie High School. Joining Margaret, one or more of the ASPIRE mentors will share their experiences.

ASPIRE (Access to Student Assistance Programs In Reach of Everyone) is a mentor program that matches trained and supportive adult volunteers with high school students to help them plan and prepare for their lives post-high school. ASPIRE provides students with someone “in their corner” who is committed to helping them pursue the next steps in their academic lives or careers. They get one-on-one help with college and career exploration, applications, reminders about meeting deadlines, directions to financial aid resources, and assistance finding and applying for scholarships.  Volunteers do not have to have attended college themselves to be effective ASPIRE mentors; they just have to be passionate and eager to help students reach their goals. Volunteers are screened and trained before working directly with students.

From a student in the program, “In the first year of ASPIRE, I didn’t know what to expect. The amount of help I got from my mentor for all my senior year responsibilities was incredibly beneficial and almost a necessity. She really helped me apply for FAFSA and the Oregon Promise super early and that was awesome!”

From a mentor, “Nothing is more rewarding than helping a young person carve a path of success on their journey to adulthood. ASPIRE has provided me the opportunity to do just that. I would encourage one and all to become an ASPIRE volunteer!”

Margaret Whiting is coordinator of the Aspire program for Neah-Kah-Nie High School. She moved to the coast with her husband in the summer of 2016, after visiting friends in Manzanita for 20 years. They live in the hills of Wheeler overlooking Neahkahnie Mountain and the Nehalem Bay. Her own mentor from her time as an elementary teacher (and a resident of Manzanita) pointed Margaret in the direction the ASPIRE position (new to Neah-Kah-nie High School in 2016). She’s loved watching the incredible relationships that form between students and their mentors
