Hoffman Center Offers Handmade and Altered Book Workshop
Students will explore the expressive possibilities of book arts

Book Arts encompass several creative and craft disciplines to create handmade and altered artists books, including printing, collage, paper craft, typography and book binding. Poppy will share examples and reference materials to demonstrate how to design, craft, and combine mixed media to create new ways of expression.

Together, we’ll consider ways that books as art communicate new ideas and information.

Participants will create art books employing simple foundational structures such as pamphlet and accordion styles. We’ll also learn techniques for altering gently used books or texts. Exploration with a variety of materials and techniques, such as collage, folding, and drawing, will be encouraged.

No previous knowledge or experience of book arts is necessary for this workshop, though good manual skills and attention to detail are desirable.

Poppy Dully is an Oregon painter, printmaker, and book artist. She works in oil paint, pen and ink and many printmaking techniques. Her artist’s books are products of discoveries. She was inspired by artist William Kentridge and filmmaker Agnes Varda to bring words, images and print together in handcrafted books. Her books have been in nationally juried exhibitions. Her books are in private and public collections including University of Washington, Stanford University, Multnomah County Center Library, University of Southern California, Savannah College of Art and Design, UCLA Fine Art Library, Tufts University, Bainbridge Museum of Art, and University of California at Berkeley, Irvine, and Riverside.
