The Craft of Pruning

A recently overhead conversation about pruning went something like this:
Friend: Sam? Sam’s a really good pruner.
Sam: Well I don’t know if I’m good but I’m not timid and can use a saw.
CRINGE! Imagine yourself a Japanese maple and how you might look after Sam’s done with you, your limbs chopped halfway up your leafy arms, your graceful shape hacked like a bad haircut and in one truly unkind cut, your crown toppled to the ground. OUCH! Would that our Sam knew how to look at that same maple and consider whether it’s simply too dense and needs to lose some branches (a thinning cut), too big, needing a bit of reducing (a heading cut) or whether it’s perfectly fine the way it us but getting crowded out by less important plants.
Learning how, when and whether to prune and seeing the potential in a tangle of twigs is easily within reach of anyone with curiosity. Even our friend Sam. All it takes is the right teacher, someone who can look at the most neglected maple and strategize its comeback. Introducing Maryann Lewis, the Hoffman Wonder Garden’s favorite aesthetic pruner. We’ve been lucky enough to bring her to town before and have seen her handiwork in local gardens as she releases a tree’s inherent form like a sculptor finding shape in stone. Maryann’s 90-minute lecture, The Craft of Pruning, is both an introduction to pruning techniques and tools (no saws!) and the art of seeing plants with a sculptor’s eye. She’ll discuss the differing effects of reducing vs removing branches, the importance of stepping back and evaluating as you go and the value of making a long-term pruning plan.
We are offering two opportunities to join Maryann: Friday afternoon’s classroom presentation, The Craft of Pruning, and Saturday’s day-long immersion in the field, The Pruning Lab.
See ya’ there Sam!
