Oil Painting: An Introductory Course

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

In this highly individualized and supportive learning environment, we will help you build the skills and confidence needed to create meaningful works of art using oil-on-canvas. Oil painting may appear challenging initially but can quickly provide a superb and forgiving conduit between eye and canvas. During this four-part workshop, we will study angle, proportion, composition, and color mixing as we paint still-life subjects. Individuals of all backgrounds will be encouraged to discover their unique style in order to better tell their visual story.

Russell Strand is a visual artist living in Bay City, Oregon. As a passionate observer of life, light, and labor, he provides reflections of his adventures, discoveries, and self as he paints Oregon’s built and natural environment. Russell studied extensively under Oregon public artist Lee Imonen, whose continued support encourages Russell to teach art to the community in a way that inspires exploration and individual expression.

SYLLABUS

First Class: Proportion, angle, and basic mixing
We will begin by introducing ourselves and sharing our background as it relates to visual art. The instructor will answer questions as he describes the goals of the class in detail. The instructor will share techniques for creating an effective underpainting sketch. We will sketch the still-life and receive instruction as necessary. Once students are satisfied with their sketches, we will mix paint from mostly primary oil colors. Students will then receive instruction on how to mix color and match it to the subject. Once we have mixed a few colors, we will apply it to the canvas. As we add color, we will discuss the importance of articulating value and build the color mixing skills needed to do so.

Second Class: Organic forms
We will perform a short critique of each student’s painting from the previous class. The instructor and fellow students will be asked to provide positive input on the work. We will then paint a more complicated subject with organic, linear forms that will extend past the edges of canvas. As we perform the underpainting sketch, students will be reminded of the sketching techniques. We will discuss composition in greater detail as we paint. Students will receive assistance in problem-solving any areas they would like to improve.

Third Class: Architectural forms
Following the critique of previous work, we will jump right into painting. Students will receive assistance in any area they need. Our subject this time will include angular, architectural forms. We will hone our sketching skills in reproducing angle and proportion in order to better build perspective. We will discuss negative space and its importance as we study the geometry of angular forms.

Fourth Class: Reflective and transparent forms
Our final class will be focused on painting reflective metallic and transparent surfaces. We will use our experience with negative space, proportion, angle, and color to study these more difficult subjects. We will discuss the direction our oil painting studies have taken and the visual direction we wish to proceed with our work.
