Kintsugi Workshop

Kintsugi (金継ぎ, gold joinery) is the Japanese craft of repairing ceramics. In this centuries-old practice, fractures transform from hidden weak points into beautiful golden elements worth celebrating. The philosophy of kintsugi teaches us to embrace imperfections in our life and appreciate the beauty of human flaws. Joyce will teach participants the traditional method and provide supplies and technical expertise along with sharing the inspiring cultural and philosophical aspects.

The Hoffman Clay Program is pleased to offer an opportunity for students to get hands-on experience with this beloved artform.

Materials:

Participants are welcome to bring a couple of damaged glazed ceramics to work on in class.  Please review the following guidelines for them:

  • The item must be 10 inches or smaller and made of ceramic or porcelain.
  • Chips must be half an inch in length or less.

Do not bring glass, wood, damaged family heirlooms, or items broken into more than four pieces.

Materials Fee ($80.00): Fee covers all supplies in kit form that attendees take home with them.

About Emi Joyce

Emi Joyce is a Japanese-born artist currently based in Portland, Oregon.  She specializes in the traditional Japanese art of Kintsugi, where she repairs broken ceramics with gold lacquer, essentially “mending” damaged objects with beauty.   Her background includes experience in textile education, fine jewelry design, and a strong connection to nature which led her to settle in Portland from her birthplace of Tokyo.
