88 Keys & 2 Chords: Classical Keyboard Music & the Art of Song

Peter Kramer was born in Portland, Oregon. He graduated from the Oberlin Conservatory with a double major in Composition and Harpsichord performance and completing  his PhD in Composition at the CUNY Graduate Center in NYC. He returns to Oregon this summer and to his part-time family home in Manzanita. Peter has a deep love of teaching and is excited about connecting with others who would like to know more about music.

Course Description
Music, as it turns out, is a way to express emotions and to connect us with something larger than ourselves. Through the act of listening, we can perhaps gain a greater understanding and appreciation of these instrumental bodies and their rich repertoire. Ultimately, sharing time with this repertoire culminates in a heightened sense of empathy and understanding inside and outside of the concert hall.

This is primarily a lecture course to inspire and educate people about music history from the Classical to Modern eras. Peter will send music examples ahead for participants to hear, these will be played again and discussed in class, he will link examples to other music to help participants understand how earlier eras are incorporated into later music. Peter hopes for an interactive session whereby people ask questions. He looks forward to learning participant’s interests and the connections they make.
