Clay calls me to weave processes and passions into sculpture as armatures and textures require new methods. All of my sculptures emerge from an armature, a support structure built to allow complicated curves and shapes to take and retain their form from the initial greenware stage to final firing.  Building the armature is another form of sculpture and often requires the use of recycled and/or industrial raw materials.

Before shaping clay to the support, I often apply textures using found wood, self-made molds, and other tools to etch or carve into clay.  Other times I will simply stretch the clay by hand to create creases and movement in the clay, resulting in the emergence of surprising details and subtle nuances.  The surface work heightens the statement of the form, coaxing the eyes to feel the clay and imagine my mark making as I create.  Ultimately, I challenge the materials as I challenge myself, asking both to stretch.
