Word & Image ~ Now in its sixth year

Through October the gallery will feature artwork and writing created over the summer in a response project called “Word & Image.” Now in its sixth year, twelve selected artists and writers are randomly paired.  Each writer and each artist creates new work in response to one of three pieces submitted by their partner. A writer might create a new poem in response to a watercolor, for example. A photographer might make a new image in response to a prose piece.

The resulting new works will be printed on broadsides, which will hang in the Hoffman Gallery, as well as published in a book. The gallery will also exhibit the twelve pieces of response art. The Word & Image book, broadsides, and art will be available for sale in the gallery.

When the air rises, the beach follows
not knowing the shape of the squall.
Tugs of what lies under or on

greet the onrush, and still that undertow,
things glimpsed, shapes form
and swirl away. Sand scours your

ankles (there’s a benefit to being
taller than your poor dog). Nothing
in all this motion says you matter

more than drift logs, just another
hurdle to veer around: it’s sand
makes wind visible, not you. But

she asked, your dog, and here
you are, storm mounting—torn
from so many tasks you could be

doing. Even with her squint, tail
down, ears back, nose to that growing
gale, she knows why she’s here.
