October Potters’ Nook Featuring Works by Barbara Temple Ayres

My love affair with pottery began in the late 1960’s after graduating with a BA in art. I earned an MAT while teaching pottery in a Portland high school then went on to teach at Clatsop CC when I moved to the coast. Meanwhile I built my own studio and down draft kiln and worked for twelve years as a full-time studio potter. It all went into mini storage when family and a teaching career took front seat. I was able to donate much of my equipment to the Hoffman Clay Studio when it was created.

My clay work has always been utilitarian oriented and driven by studies with master potters and historical perspectives. Handling the clay and working on the wheel take me into the magical world of centering, letting go, connecting to earthly depths and pure pleasure. It is a healing art form, and I am grateful that the Hoffman Clay Studio affords me the opportunity to indulge in my passion.
