Writing Class

Deeper into Discovery
Fridays 10/1, 10/15, 10/29, 11/12, 12/3
(every other Friday except for the last class,
which will be on 12/3 in order to avoid
the Thanksgiving holiday)
10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Tuition: $150
Via Zoom

Maximum 8 Students

Prerequisite:  Past participation in Poetry as Discovery or by special permission by the instructor

In this 5-session poetry-writing workshop we will continue our study and practice of the craft elements introduced in Poetry As Discovery. We will pay particular attention to the poetic turn by examining contemporary poems that surprise and move us by taking us somewhere unexpected. At-home writing assignments will give participants the opportunity to try various approaches, which we will share and discuss together.

Each class will be part craft lesson, part workshop.

In addition to the two-hour class, participants should plan to spend several hours each week drafting their assignments, plus one or more hours reviewing and commenting on the work of their peers via an online forum.  Students are invited to join colleagues in-person in the Writing Lounge at the center, or via Zoom.  Depending on the weather, the instructor may sometimes teach via Zoom as well.

About the instructor: Emily Ransdell is a part-time resident of Manzanita with an MFA in Poetry. She co-leads the Manzanita Writers Series PoetryFest and is the founder of the popular Word & Image Project at the Hoffman Center. She has published widely.  Listen to Emily read samples of her work.
