Shellac Plate Printmaking with Chine Colle

In this fun, process-oriented class we will be designing our shellac printing plates, then inking and printing them with a printing press. After the basic skills are mastered on Day One, students will be able to branch out on Day Two, adding color and pattern using the chine colle technique (incorporating glued decorative paper into the printing process).

Shellac plates are made by coating illustration board with several layers of shellac, letting it dry, and then incising into the plate, then inking and printing the plate like an etching. It is a versatile printmaking method and suitable for all skill levels. Shellac plates will be premade for all students.

Jan Branham, a part-time Manzanita resident, taught high school art for 35 years and after retirement found her voice in printmaking. In March 2023 she had a print show at the Hoffman Gallery entitled Ansisters and Mancestors. Jan has taught a variety of classes at the Bainbridge Artisan Resource Network (BARN) on Bainbridge Island in Washington State and won a few awards, too.
