“I love short stories because I believe they are the way we live. They are what our friends tell us, in their pain and joy, their passion and rage, their yearning and their cry against injustice.” – Andre Dubus

This workshop will encourage and push participants to fully immerse themselves in the writing of short stories. During the course of this 5-week session (each session to last 2 hours), we will look at the elements of short story writing (i.e. character, plot, setting, conflict, etc.), examine some classic short stories to understand their impact and form, and discuss the function of the short story – how it differs from memoir or the novel. But mainly our focus and time will be spent in writing. Each participant will produce at least one polished short story, as well as create a portfolio of opening lines and pages for future development. We will also provide thoughtful and kind critiques for our fellow writers, so that we are able to develop and enrich our stories. Participants should be willing to spend time outside of class in preparing critiques. The workshop will culminate in a reading by the participants of the work that has been developed throughout the sessions.

This workshop is limited to 8 participants. Previous experience in writing short stories is not required.
