Surge 2020: An Online Writing Course
Instructor:  Megan Kruse
August, 2020, starting August 2.
Tuition: $195, 8 students maximum
Please register by July 29th

Has your writing been suffering a drought these days? Well, join us in August to get it thriving again.  We’re delighted to bring Megan Kruse back for another online writing course.  Using a combination of writing platform Wet.Ink and live Zoom sessions, Megan will help you and your fellow participants generate new material or re-energize a project that’s been languishing this year.

Here’s how Megan plans to guide the course:

Week 1…  Taking Stock, Gathering Seeds, & Planting: Identify ideas and material already within you, and do memory work to bring those to the surface.

Week 2…    Germinating & Taking Root: Let your ideas run wild, and generate work with abandon

Week 3…  Transplanting & Focusing: Identify work that is ready for the full sun of your attention; marry new work to existing projects, or hone your vision for your new work

Week 4… Growing & Harvesting:  Consider ways to invest in your work over time, and make a plan to maintain momentum going forward from this class

There will be a kick-off Zoom meeting on Sunday, August 2nd (registrants will receive a link as the date nears), as well as a closing in-person event in the Wonder Garden (with masks and 6 feet apart) on Saturday, August 29th. More details about the event once the class starts.

About the Instructor:
Megan Kruse is the author of the novel Call Me Home, published by Hawthorne Books. She was one of the National Book Foundation’s 5 Under 35 for 2015, and won a 2016 Pacific Northwest Book Award. She currently teaches fiction for Eastern Oregon University’s Low-Residency MFA program, and lives in Olympia with her twin toddlers, Harry & Juli.

Here are a few testimonials from our last online writing retreat with Megan, (along with Jennie Shortridge):

“I was quite frankly surprised by how well the online critique group worked. The comments from the other participants provided an important mix of similarities and different perspectives. Megan’s insight often provided more big picture feedback. Her craft tips were spot on. it was great to put faces to names at the ending in person weekend retreat. The perfect combination of work on our own life schedule and then in-person sessions. We all talked about how much we’d like to do this again.” – Kathie Hightower

“Candidly, I wasn’t sure how deeply I could engage with or learn from an online course … but my fears were entirely erased by this experience!  Critiques from other participants felt more nuanced and thought-out, and having instructors who not only offered their deep feedback & critical eye, but also layered into participant feedback, was SO helpful! This workshop gave me the push I needed to transform a short story into a critical pivot scene in the novel I’m now working on!” – Laura Bailey
