Manzanita Writers Series

“Winter Wordplay” Mini-Workshops
Tuesdays | 10:30-1:00pm
January through March, 2019
Writing Lounge at the Hoffman Center
Drop-in fee is $5
Join us for one or all of the sessions

Join a supportive writing community and learn short craft lessons to apply immediately during Writing Lounge at the Hoffman Center for the Arts.

From January through March 2019, on the Tuesday “prompt-writing days,” you’ll learn a bit about craft and then apply that lesson immediately as everyone in the group writes to the same pertinent prompt.

Just in case you don’t know, this is a deal. Looking at other prompt writing opportunities, here are your options. You can brave the pass in winter to attend a prompt group in Portland for $20 each session or walk over to the Hoffman Center for the Arts in Manzanita and join in both a craft mini-lesson and prompt writing, for $5.

On alternate Tuesdays, the Writing Lounge is open for drop-ins for quiet writing time in a supportive environment.

Schedule:

January 8 ~ Senses: Light up Your Reader’s Brain with Kathie Hightower

Learn the fascinating research on how reading about senses lights up different parts of your brain. Reading the word alone achieves this. We’ll discuss how to use this scientific fact to engage your reader with more of the senses.

January 22 ~ Creating Effective Dialogue with Andy Barker

We will practice the use of dialogue to develop character and voice, to advance plot, and to convey conflict and subtext. This will involve not only what characters say to each other, but also how those words are framed through attribution, detail, and “beats.”

February 5 ~ Experimenting with Point of View with Vera Wildauer

1st, 2nd, 3rd… No it’s not baseball. Try out different points of view and explore when each is most effective. Plus, write from the point of view of your peripheral characters to help you learn more about your protagonist.

February 19 ~ Metaphor: “It’s Like This” with Emily Ransdell

Using metaphor to help your readers see with new eyes. We will examine some classic examples from multiple genres, then try a few prompts that stretch our own imaginations and descriptive skills. We’ll practice finding fresh and relatable ways to tell our readers how this is like that.

March 5 ~ Movement for Writers with Kathie Hightower

We all want to get into flow when writing, but all that sitting can wreak havoc with our bodies. Learn simple moves to avoid Carpal Tunnel, Text Neck, shoulder and back pain, to keep your writing flow going.
Experiential session to learn simple moves, followed by a writing prompt tied to body. Bring yoga mat or towel and wear loose clothing.  This session will be held in the Main Room at the Hoffman.

March 19 ~ Emotions Expressed in the Body with Mark Scott Smith

We will learn how to write about emotions that are experienced as sensations in the physical body.

The Manzanita Writers’ Series is a program of the Hoffman Center for the Arts and will be held at the Hoffman Center (across from Manzanita Library at 594 Laneda Avenue.) For more information contact Kathie Hightower,  [email protected]
