Woven Vessels in Recycled Materials

In this workshop we will be immersing ourselves in a wonderful variety of recycled materials. We will be using everything from telecom wire to dog food bags, bike tires to cereal boxes, kite strings to old jeans and many more such items. Attendees will learn foundational weaving techniques including twining, plaiting and coiling. You will get to choose the materials you are most interested in and we will work together to pick the best techniques to accomplish your woven form.

Recycled materials create a lot of color and texture options, they allow us to be really creative in designing our pieces and we will see a room full of one of a kind woven vessels as the day goes on. You will leave with a completed woven vessel and experience in beginning basketry techniques. For those of you with weaving experience this class will offer a chance to innovate, and will give you the opportunity to work with materials you may not have worked with before and come to your weaving with fresh eyes.

About Rose

Rose Covert uses natural materials to weave sculptural forms. Using reimagined basketry techniques, Rose creates woven landscapes that twist and travel around themselves. Her work is evocative of the natural world they are created from. She is a longtime Portland resident who has fallen in love with the rich plant life that grows here. Rose works entirely with plants that grow within a 120 mile radius of her home, some of her work consists of plants she grows herself and the rest are from plants she either tends or harvests from on a regular basis. She finds inspiration in the natural world, the exquisiteness of elemental forms and landscapes, as well as the habitats the plants grow in. Her work is a continuation of the beauty of the natural world.

Rose has been a member and board member of the Columbia Basin Basketry Guild since 2014. She teaches basketry and woven sculptural arts at a variety of folk schools and workshop spaces in Oregon.
