Writing Alive! Workshop
Instructor: Dana Cunningham Anderson
10 Weeks on Thursdays
With a break after the first 5 weeks
11 am to 1:30 pm
Writing Alive! Workshops meet weekly in two sittings on Thursdays: mid-day from 11 am to 1:30 pm (this workshop is currently full) and in the afternoon from 2 to 4:30 pm. Our approach is based on The Amherst Method, a way of writing developed thirty years ago by Pat Schneider in Amherst, MA to fill a need for a supportive, non-academic, community-based approach to writing. It emphasizes excellent training of facilitators; positive feedback for first-draft writing; development of skills to support deep, appreciative listening; and encouragement for the development of each writer’s authentic, original voice. To learn more about The Amherst Method, see Pat Schneider’s two books, Writing Alone and With Others (2003) and How the Light Gets In (2013), each published by Oxford University Press.
We follow basic guidelines, reading these aloud and discussing them briefly at the start of each writing session. We write in timed periods, usually 12-18 minutes for each of two, three or four prompts. All writers are invited to read aloud; everyone has the option to pass. In our prompts and feedback, we explore the sacred, the profane, and everything in between. Writers at all levels of experience, of all genres, are welcome. (Our workshops are currently open to women only. This may change in the future with sufficient interest from men in the community who would like to participate.)
Workshops meet for 10-weeks at a time broken into two 5-week periods with one week off in the middle (5 weeks on, 1 week off, alternating throughout the year). We do not meet from mid-December to mid-January.
Tuition for 10 weeks is $250. Tuition for 5 weeks is $140. Scheduled drop-ins are offered on a space-available basis for local residents who want to try out the workshop, for visitors to the area, or for “regulars” unable to sign up for a full workshop. Cost for drop-ins is $30/week. Limited, sliding-scale tuition is available. Ask for details about this. Our workshops are improved by inclusion of writers from a wide-array of life-styles and points of view.
