Backfire–Mark Scott Smith

Poetry:

Backfire on the mountain
Brake lights glowing red
Tires whirring in the rain
cast silver beads of water
across the misty highway

Hank Williams on the radio
A Lucky between my lips
I wonder if she’s lonely tonight
or maybe just feeling free
from all the rusty heartache

Evergreens flash by in darkness
Patches of melting snow
Coasting downhill in second gear
I let the feelings flow

After an academic medicine career, Mark Scott Smith now pursues creative writing on the Oregon coast. He has published two novels (Enemy in the Mirror and The Osprey and the Sea Wolf) and essays and poems in the North Coast Squid, Rain and the Hoffman Center Word & Image Project.
