The Accidental Dry Garden, with Loree Bohl

Two passions are the only prerequisites you need to get in on Loree Bohl’s first-ever Hoffman talk: a love of unusual, drought-tolerant plants and a weakness for garden photography.

Sound like you?

That certainly describes Loree, who is perhaps most widely known for her irresistible blog, The Danger Garden, and her 2021 book, Fearless Gardening: Be Bold, Break the Rules, Grow What You Love.

Loree’s book title pretty much sums up her approach to her well-known Portland garden, now celebrating its 25th year under her unfailing eye and meticulous care.

Like many dedicated plants people, Loree’s garden is her laboratory, not simply for experimenting with plants but for defining her proclivities as a gardener. Turns out they can be summed up in one word: spiky!

Loree likes plants with edgy personalities, sharp lines and strong architectural forms. As she amassed a collection of plants that scratched that itch (couldn’t resist), she stumbled into a garden aesthetic that was not only exciting but needed little water.

Her talk, The Accidental Dry Garden, is a celebration of serendipity. As Loree walks us through a wonderland of photographs, she’ll show us how she unexpectedly ended up with the consummate 21st century, climate-change conscious garden using plants that can animate a garden with deliciously provocative beauty.
