Featuring works by David Dickinson and Roberta Lampert

David Dickinson
– Awake in the Woods; Cascadian Forest Landscapes

This work is an exploration of wild forest and its impact on those who experience it. Science has documented that direct, mindful experience of the forest boosts human health and wellness. Evolved from distant arboreal ancestors, we are still deeply affected by the trees.

Forests inspire wonder, awe, beauty and peace. They also harbor witches, beasts, shadows, fears. I’m seeking a way of making marks and expressing the forest that isn’t too specific, exacting or illustrative but not so simplified as to lose the chaos, punctuated by rhythms that relay the explosively generative, complex variety of flora that make the forest so compelling.

These paintings start with forest visits (mostly in coastal forests of Oregon and Washington) where plein air panels, drawings and photos are collected as studies. Most plein air panels require more time back in studio to finish, to resolve the picture. Larger canvases are done in studio with all the field work as studies and take weeks if not months.

I’m largely self-taught, though I’ve learned much from occasional workshops over the years, especially time studying with Portland painter Jef Gunn (since 2015). I painted landscapes in watercolor from roughly 1993 to 2015 and primarily in oil since 2015. Oil has such luscious texture and surface and such vivid color.

I’ve held an odd array of jobs over the years to support my art projects, from cartoon animator to mental health therapist. I was the Marketmaster and Arts Program Manager at SeaYle’s Pike Place Market for nearly 20 years but recently moved to Eugene where I work for the city supporting artists. I paint to commune with Nature and to bring back small, rectangular samples of experience: windows that channel fresh atmosphere into my urban home, that sustain me until I can go back to the wilds again.

Roberta Lampert – Deep and Shallow Waters

My work centers on appreciation of and experience in nature, especially coastal themes of wildlife, geology, and
impressions of water and sea life. My hand-built pieces and thrown forms embody themes derived from
experience in nature and observation of geological features. Work might be impressionistic or representational,
but always focused on the rhythms and patterns of the natural world. Atmospheric firing, with its variations and
unpredictability relates to the forces of nature.
