Art Lecture: Oregon Women Artists—150 Years Strong
with Bonnie Laing-Malcolmson
May 21 | 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm
Sherrie Wolf- Self Portrait in Rosa Bonheur’s Studio, 2023. Oil on Canvas, 70×95 inches
Women began painting and photographing a wild and beautiful American Northwest, corseted, and wearing floor length gowns. Today, acceptance as equals in a once male dominated society has opened doors for Oregon women to achieve significant recognition for their powerful and ambitious works of art.
Join retired Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Curator of Northwest Art from the Portland Art Museum while she shows images and discusses some of her favorite paintings, sculpture, photography, ceramics, and more by Oregon’s indomitable women. Imagine photographing the Columbia Gorge from a barge in the 1890s, traveling from Portland to Italy by boat and train in 1915 to study with one of America’s great Impressionist painters, or, as a divorced mother of three in the 1960s, being told you would be reduced to teaching art part-time, since a young man with a family needed full-time work. Beyond the stories and politics, these women’s gorgeous creative works will speak for themselves.
