Adell Shetterly—A Moment in Time

Through this exhibition, A Moment in Time, I invite you to step into these fleeting moments with me. Each piece is a unique exploration of the interplay between planning and spontaneity, control and chance. These prints reflect my emotions, inspirations, and the ever-changing world around me.

In the making of my art, I lose myself in the creative process—hours slip by unnoticed. For me, printmaking is about discovery. My work emerges from a place of play, experimentation, and wonder. Each pull of the press reveals a new lesson; it’s a dance between knowledge and investigation, where established techniques become springboards for innovation.

I’m inspired by the textures and colors of the natural world, as well as the emotions that arise when being fully present in the moment. Themes of transition, the echoes of stillness within change, and the beauty of nature unify my work.

A monotype captures the immediacy of a moment, producing a single, unique print. A monoprint introduces repeating elements balancing  spontaneity and structure, and provides opportunity to revisit and reinterpret themes across works. Each print tells its own story: the shift of light across a landscape, the ebb and flow of emotions, or the quiet stillness within a chaotic world.

My hope is that these prints not only capture a moment for me but create a moment for you –a chance to pause, reflect, and connect with your own experience of time.

Artist Biography
Growing up in the Willamette Valley, Adell Shetterly traveled the winding roads with her family from the Willamette Valley to Wheeler to visit her grandparents.  Happy visits to Manzanita included sandcastles, wave jumping, and hot chocolate.

Adell studied elementary education at Western Oregon University. She taught and substitute taught while her two children grew. After a career in education and curriculum development for a city recreation program, she moved to Bend, Oregon in late 2001 with her husband. It was here that Adell developed community arts programs for two non-profit organizations; Arts Central and Atelier 6000. Adell met printmaking face-to-face at Atelier 6000 and began to enroll in workshops and studied with Master Printmaker, Pat Clark as well as other experienced printmakers.

Upon retirement, Shetterly began to work in her own studio, Joy Press. She is a printmaker who creates inventive and expressive hand-pulled prints that investigate printmaking processes and techniques that range in style from the abstract to deconstructed landscapes. Speaking about her passion for printmaking, Shetterly expresses, “I found my home in printmaking. I love it – it never gets old for me.”

Her prints have been showcased in group and solo exhibitions in Bend, Eugene, and Portland, Oregon, as well as Brooklyn, New York, and New Haven, Connecticut. Her works also are in personal collections across the country and overseas.

She is represented by Tumalo Art Co. in Bend and RiverSea Gallery in Astoria, Oregon.

Angelita Surmon—Following Light

Artist Biography
I am an Oregon artist who lives and works in Portland. My current paintings and glass works reflect a deep-rooted love of the landscape and an acknowledgement of the path led by other landscape artists. My works are informed by the tangled grasses and reflections at the water’s edge, and the branches and thickets of the forest understory.

I find nature to be my best teacher. I have exhibited in galleries locally and nationally for over 40 years and enjoy doing commissioned work for private and public art projects.

Andrew Crossley—One Thing Leads to Another

Artist Biography
Andrew Crossley moved to Wheeler two years ago with his wife and cats. They immediately felt at home on the North Oregon Coast because all their favorite activities are now in their “backyard”— crabbing, clamming, foraging, and golfing. Andrew works in Manzanita at the boutique Finnesterre, which has helped integrate him into the community and  inspired him to continue with his craft. After studying fine art at Oregon State University, Andrew ended up pursuing a path in communication, but his enthusiasm for the arts followed him. It wasn’t until more recently that he identified his preferred mode of expression: collage. This is Andrew’s premiere gallery show.

“Trust the process.” You may have heard this phrase in a variety of situations, and I find it’s a major part of my artistic philosophy. I’m making connections that lead to the next, and the next, and so on until a scene or dreamscape unfolds. I seek fluidity between the seemingly unrelated images. The result of this practice is an abstract cohesiveness that I never could have predicted from the start. I appreciate the diversity in magazines—not only the subject matter, but the colors, textures, patterns, and symbols. They are also very accessible, recyclable and free (if you know where to look). Just like a painter and their cache of tubes or cans, I have great quantities of clippings at my disposal. All it takes are a few synchronized pieces to go down the slippery slope of exploration and creation..
