Artist Talk: My Own Flag to Raise

The Hoffman Center for the Arts invites you to meet visual artist Jessica Rehfield for the following artist talk and a craft workshop (June 14, more info here). These offerings are offered to the community at minimal cost thanks to grant funding from the Rainmaker Craft Initiative.

My Own Flag to Raise
Artist Jessica Rehfield shares their work, My Own Flag To Raise (a giant, hand-crafted, multi-pride flag crafted on the floor of the Salem Arts Association) and how this art became a clarion call for a small arts non-profit to create a path toward learning about 2sLGBTQIAP rights and representation from queer artists. The flag, a 14’x8′ work made of 12 flags hand-assembled and stitched, will be displayed in Hoffman during the talk and workshop, with a suite of photographs highlighting the beauty of Jessica’s wedding in Manzanita in July 2022.

In this talk, discover how a project with a “flag as a subject” became a commitment to a year-long partnership with investment in programming on LGBTQIAP rights and spurred the community into conversations of love, respect and holding each other accountable in a time when accountability translates into care. Learn how arts centers can provide a model for respectful community action and become true allies for positive
social change.
