In this 5-week poetry-writing workshop, we will examine memorable contemporary poems that surprise us by taking us somewhere unexpected. To write such a poem is thrilling but can’t be willed. It requires letting go of the poems we might have in our heads to make way for the ones in our hearts. We will look at techniques such as turns and associative leaps. We’ll study key tools of craft such as syntax, metaphor, diction, and lineation. At-home writing assignments will give participants the opportunity to try various techniques.
Each class will be part craft lesson, part workshop, except February 5, which will be devoted to sharing revisions.
In addition to the two-hour Zoom class, participants should plan to spend several hours each week drafting their assignments, plus one or more hours reviewing and commenting on the work of their peers via an online forum.
About the instructor: Emily Ransdell is a part-time resident of Manzanita with an MFA in Poetry. She co-leads the Manzanita Writers Series PoetryFest and is the founder of the popular Word & Image Project at the Hoffman Center. She has published widely. You can hear Emily read samples of her work.
