Social Realism and Government Funding:
Works Projects Administration (WPA) Art in and beyond Oregon
Using the Runquist exhibition as a departure point, Laing-Malcolmson will explore art work created for and funded by the US federal government throughout the Great Depression. How did federal support for the arts affect Northwest (NW) artists? What does the artwork tell us about the time period? Which leading NW artists participated in the WPA, and how did their work and other US artists’ work benefit from the projects?
Retired Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Curator of Northwest Art from the Portland Art Museum, Bonnie laing-Malcolmson, will present this talk and a second one on June 2, Social Activism and Burnt Stumps: Two Brothers’ Living Art
