Workshop: Storytelling

Story Telling for Writers with Shay Knorr
Friday Afternoons, 2 to 4 pm, January 5, 12, 19, 26th
Public Presentation, February 2nd, 2 to 4 pm
Tuition: $185

This workshop is for writers to develop a storytelling presentation from their own work, which is different from a reading of written work.

The workshop consists of 5 weekly sessions. Story Tellers will have time to consider, craft and edit their stories between sessions.

Session #1. Bring ideas of up to three experiences in your life that you’d like to explore…not your life story, but pivotal incidents in your life. Shay and the other workshop participants will help decide what might be the most interesting to present to an audience. If there is one topic you’d like to explore in more detail, that is fine, too.  Shay will speak about what makes a good story for presenting, as well as the process of crafting a story 10-12 minutes long to speak for a public presentation.

Session #2. Participants will share what they have written and are encouraged to write all they want to say at this point. We will then talk about and address editing for storytelling.

Session #3. Participants will bring in their edited versions to share. The group will discuss more editing details, as well as performing the story on a stage. Writers find this helpful since they are asked most often to read their work, rather than to present or perform their work without a “script.” We will talk about stage presence, stage fright. clothing etc.

Session #4. This is the “dress rehearsal.” We will set up the room so participants stand on the stage and practice telling their stories in front of the group. This version should be the final story. Each participant will know their own story so well to be able to tell it. There will be no notes or scripts to read from.

Session #5. The final session is a performance which will be open to the public on February 2nd, at 2 pm.
