Chuck Winkelman is teaching another stained-glass workshop this fall. The Hoffman Center sponsors the workshop in Winkelman’s garage in Manzanita, where students can use his extensive equipment. It is limited to eight students. The class begins with an introduction to tools, the selection of designs and layouts, cutting boards, and glass cutting. Next, Chuck provides a few simple window templates, but students can bring their designs.
All materials are provided for a small window (12” x 12”), but options for a larger window are available for an additional materials fee.
Students provide, a 1 ½” or 2” dry paintbrush, pencil & ruler, and safety equipment such as safety glasses (if you wear glasses, you can omit the safety glasses). Some participants bring their own rubber gloves. Bring a lunch and beverage, which can be stored in a refrigerator, if needed.
Winkelman began making stained glass windows when restoring his 1913 craftsman bungalow in Seattle. At the time, he could not afford to have the eleven missing leaded windows replaced. So, he took a class and began making the windows himself. Soon, friends and neighbors started asking him to make windows for them. Chuck says: “that was 20 years ago, and the rest is history.” Winkelman’s experience working with wood led to the construction of frames, and his university art degree helped the design process.
Since then, he has embraced the Arts and Crafts movement of the late 19th and early 20th century, drawing inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright, architects Rennie Mackintosh, and brothers Charles and Henry Greene. Winkelman’s exhibits in the Hoffman Gallery revealed his diverse artistic palette with the inclusion of Art Nouveau windows and pieces that do not fall in either camp.
Winkelman makes custom windows and sells his work in his online shop. Although retired, he says his “hobby” takes up more of his time as years go by.
