Immersed in the View:
Landscape Painting from Field to Studio
In this three-part landscape painting workshop, participants of any experience level will explore drawing and reference photography methods to study and express familiar landscape views. Students will focus on sketching and composition to later create two landscape paintings in the studio using an opaque medium. The workshop will be split into three meetings and will consider capturing light as it falls on architectural and natural landscape subjects.
We will discuss sketching tricks and use a variety of study practices to create expressions of places with observational care and an emphasis on each student cultivating his or her unique artistic voice. We will use drawing on site and reference photography as a means of visual note taking and the instructor will later help us synthesize our field experiences in the studio.
Students will need to bring:
• Quality set of gouache or acrylic paints including:
• Napthol Red, Yellow, Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Zinc white
• 5oz (if acrylic), 59ml (if gouache) Titanium white
• Set of pallet paper
• Acrylic medium (if applicable)
• Value set of brushes (Instructor will provide additional brushes if needed)
• Quality sketchpad, 9×12″
• Graphite pencils: 2B, 4H, 4B
• Eraser and pencil sharpener
• 3-4 18×24″ sheets of paper, canvas, or board rated for medium of choice
Instructor biography:
Russell Strand has been painting since early childhood and creating oil on canvas works for several years. A passionate observer of life, light, and labor, he draws inspiration from his adventures around the Pacific Northwest and work experience as a trades laborer. As he paints landscape subjects here on the North Coast, Russell is often remindedthat art is everywhere and is for everyone.
