Visualization and Woodcut Printing

Join us for a process-oriented workshop at the Summer Solstice, facilitated by master printer, James L. Tucker, and painter, Jessica Harrison.
This two-day workshop blends various meditation techniques with the traditional art of woodcut printing, offering a unique way to tap into creativity and transform ideas into striking prints. Through guided visualization meditation and mindful observation, participants will develop their artistic vision before sketching, carving, and printing their own woodcuts. With time spent outdoors for inspiration, as well as hands-on instruction in carving and printing techniques, this workshop provides both a reflective and practical approach to printmaking. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced artist, this is a chance to explore new creative processes and bring your ideas to life.  Each participant will produce multiple prints of their unique woodblock design.
A materials list will be provided to registered participants.

About the instructors

James Lewis Tucker holds a BFA in Printmaking from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. In 2013, he founded The Aesthetic Union, a letterpress print shop and gallery in San Francisco’s Mission District that quickly became a vital hub for art, collaboration, and the city’s creative community. Tucker’s work, which has long traversed the realms of printmaking, design, and poetry, was deeply intertwined with the cultural fabric of San Francisco for over a decade. In 2023, after selling the shop to his former employees, he relocated to Sonoma County, where he continues to pursue his artistic practice. In addition to leading mindfulness workshops and Zen meditation groups, Tucker teaches letterpress workshops at North Bay Letterpress Arts, where he also serves on the board. He is renowned for his extensive catalog of woodblock print landscapes and his published poetry books, further
solidifying his dual practice as an artist and writer.

Jessica Harrison is a landscape oil painter and wood carver from Marin, California, with a deep-rooted passion for creativity and mindfulness. With experience in mindfulness education, Jessica has led creative visualization workshops that blend artistic expression with meditative practice. Actively engaged in both artistic and spiritual communities in California, Jessica fosters a nurturing space where participants can explore self-expression, presence, and inner stillness through art.
