Manzanita Writers' Series Presents
Writing Workshop: “Deep Imagining” with Molly Gloss On Craft
Saturday, August 23 | 10:00am – 1:00pm
Hoffman Center for the Arts | 594 Laneda Avenue | Manzanita
Tuition: $100 | Scholarships are available for this workshop
In this three-hour generative writing workshop, Molly Gloss will begin with an informal talk on the craft of writing, along with an opportunity for discussion and questions, and then lots of hands-on writing. This workshop is open to all levels of writing experience to deepen your connection to craft, elements of style, and a focus on discernment and description as the writer imagines into the world-building practice of character and setting.
When you think of description—of place, of action, of a character—how do you decide if it’s needed and purposeful? when is it only decorative, or could even go unmentioned? We’ll look at how accomplished writers make use of description, paying particular attention to where they’ve chosen to give only the briefest gesture of description, and where they’ve slowed down to describe something at length, and how they’ve used that description as a tool to deepen the story. And then we’ll try our own hands at writing description that accomplishes something vital to our stories. Come prepared to write!
