Botanical Dye Printmaking

In this introduction to botanical dye printmaking, we will learn how to extract nature’s colors and textures to print on paper. Working with fresh leaves, participants will learn how to make bundles to dye using two techniques: boiling and steaming. Participants will have a chance to create several pieces each day.

We will start with simple and easily created plant dyes and discuss other dyes and appropriate safety considerations. Discussion of setup for home dyeing including materials and equipment will be covered. Note-taking during the workshop is encouraged to develop your own step-by-step guide. A resource sheet will be available at the end of the class.

The instructor will be providing plant material; however, feel free to bring fresh leaves if you feel inspired to gather some for use in the workshop. Look for leaves with defined veins: maples, plum, ferns, and cotinus (smoke bush) are good choices.

Please bring a lunch for yourself.
