Wax Praxis: An Encaustic Workshop
Join artist Robert Procter to learn the fundamentals of painting with hot wax, referred to as encaustic painting, one of the oldest painting methods known. The oldest surviving encaustic panel paintings are from the Romano-Egyptian Fayum mummy portraits from Egypt around 200–400 AD. In Greece the encaustic method was used to create portraits of the deceased and, practically, to help seal their fishing boats.
Students will begin by learning the basics of equipment and materials, safety, and panel preparation. We will then progress to a host of approaches, including making lines, using stencils, embedding fabric, and transferring laser print images. Additional topics will include combining encaustic with oil, as well as delving into the magic of combining alcohol, India inks, and shellac.
Whether you are new to this medium or have previously explored the technique of encaustic painting, this will be a fascinating workshop. If you have an idea for a project, bring it to the workshop to see how your vision can be developed further.
