Exploring Light and Shadow
In this workshop, we will use both transparent and opaque mediums to discover methods of capturing light and shadow. There will be an emphasis on angle, proportion, and value as we strengthen our observational skills using still life subjects.
Beginning with diluted ink and a brush, we will sketch the forms in our still life setup on paper. We will contemplate capturing the overall personality of the spaces within our subjects and the relationships between them. We will then use this sketch as an underpainting and create another study on top of it using black and white gouache.
In switching to an opaque medium, we will be able to use different tricks to develop our study and make decisions about which aspects of our ink underpainting should be retained. We will be able to fix unwanted mistakes, retain beautiful mistakes, and problem-solve difficulties we may have had with the ink. We will experience different brush behaviors and the ways they enhance our expressions of light. The methods we cover will be excellent practice for painting with other mediums such as oils and acrylics.
Instructor biography:
Russell Strand has been painting since early childhood and creating oil on canvas works for five years. A passionate observer of life, light, and labor, he draws inspiration from his adventures and work experience as a trades laborer. Russell paints both landscape and still-life subjects here on the North Coast. In February, he is a featured artist in the gallery at the Hoffman Center. Russell is dedicated to painting from life and appreciates the unifying aspects of both working in public and leading workshops. When painting from direct observation, he is often reminded that art is everywhere and is for everyone.
