Manya Shapiro

Manya Shapiro grew up in Seattle and moved to Portland in 1973 to pursue her interest in textiles. Manya took classes at Oregon School of Arts and Crafts and later taught workshops there. She joined Blackfish Gallery in 1985 and showed work there for ten years. Her work was in three Oregon Biennials, and she has had one person exhibitions at Museum of Contemporary Crafts and Oregon College of Art and Craft and Murdoch  Collections. Manyna  served on the boards of Museum of Contemporary Craft and PNCA as well as Art Net.

My work is an ongoing dialogue with materials that I am drawn to. I am inspired by traditional crafts (quilting, knitting, stitching and basketry) and interested in contemporary interpretations. Another influence for me was the feminist art movement which brought women domestic arts into museums and appreciated the artistic value. I like to contrast everyday materials with more precious “art” materials.  Often, I use dress imagery to stand in for the figure (both presence and absence). I love fabric for its tactility and its evocative nature. But, while cloth can be ephemeral or fragile, I am also attracted to more permanent materials like wire, plastic or screen which hold a shape and are more sculptural.  The repetitious process of knitting, stitching, piecing is very meditative; and the work changes as I make it. I hope the viewers bring their own responses to these familiar images.

Christopher Belluschi

Christopher Belluschi is a sculptor based in Portland, Oregon. He graduated from Whitman College in 2018, where he studied Art and Anthropology. He works with wood (primarily Cedar) and stone (Marbles and Travertine).

He grew up exploring amongst the rocks beneath Neah-Kah-Nie and credits this special area for his profound fondness of wood. In the Fall of 2016, he had the good fortune of studying abroad in Florence, Italy. During his time there, he visited the storied quarries above Carrara and carved its fine marble for the first time.

Following graduation from college, he spent a year teaching English in Madrid, where he was able to immerse himself in the rich artistic history of the Iberian peninsula. Upon returning home to Portland, he sought work that would allow him to develop the skills needed to become a sculptor. To that end, he spent the early-Covid years working in electric guitar and furniture restoration workshops. In the winter of 2022, he was invited to work alongside master sculptor M.J. Anderson in her Nehalem studio and hasn’t looked back since.

Early Works represents Belluschi’s explorations in wood and stone from the past year and a half. His sculptures seek to combine the organic forms of the natural world with the mystical qualities of art from antiquity. This is his first gallery exhibition.

Iris Sullivan Daire

Iris Sullivan Daire is an installation artist, wielding natural dyes to create colorful worlds that provoke thought and encourage deeper connection to nature.
Where I come from…
I grew up in the midwest in a small farm town, dividing my time between ranging around the countryside and learning all sorts of practical skills from the awesome women in my family. I started weaving at the age of seven, which eventually led to earning a BFA in Fiber Arts with a focus on natural dyes from the University of Oregon in 1996. After graduation my husband and I moved to Astoria so that I could teach fiber arts classes at the local college. During those early years on the Oregon Coast we started our family, I continued to study and explore natural dyes, and the first incarnation of Dream Bird Studio was born.
Dream Bird Studio rose from the ashes during my recovery from breast cancering treatments in 2014. That experience, and its aftermath, continue to bring many challenges and gifts, a return to immersing myself in art being one such gift.My work continues to evolve and change as I do. A constant is a fierce commitment to embodying Nurture Culture – namely that which supports care of the Earth, and all of the beings that live here, including plants, animals and the amazing diversity of humans.
