Featuring works by Renée Zangara and Craig LeCroy

Renée Zangara, Land Ho!

Most of my life I’ve lived near the Pacific Ocean or within a couple hours’ drive from it. This majestic body of water has always
been a place of refuge, inspiration, and wonderment—a source for my imagination and the paintings you’re seeing here today.

The paintings I’ve created following my visits to the coast are reminiscent of the work that’s been inspired by the surroundings of my studio. My home and studio are located in St. Johns—at the edge of town in Portland, Oregon—on a peninsula surrounded by the Willamette and Columbia Rivers. The Baltimore Woods and the Willamette River are part of my daily experience and I’m deeply aware of the dynamics of the river’s energy force that affects, and is affected by, everything. In my studio I observe habitats both secluded and visible, animals that are reclusive and daring, waterborne vessels that are ginormous and diminutive, and the massive volumes, varieties, and entanglements of plant life. Between these opposites are innumerable domains of existence, all swirling about and vitally connected. At the river’s edge and at the ocean’s shore, I am gobsmacked.

Renée Zangara is an artist residing in Portland, Oregon and is an active member of the regional art community. Renée’s work has been exhibited nationally and is in private and public collections, including the Portland Art Museum, Rood Family Pavilion, Regional Arts & Culture Council’s Visual Chronicle, Oregon Health and Sciences University, Oregon State University’s College of Agricultural Sciences, the Swedish Medical Center Foundation in Seattle, and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Renée’s work has been featured on OPB’s Oregon Art Beat.

Craig LeCroy, Clouds and Ocean

I am drawn to stone as a medium where I can spontaneously realize the form, space, and illusion that is being created.  I seek simplified forms because of their emotional and philosophical significance—their ability to stimulate reflection.  It is important for each sculpture to transcend the object it represents.  Sculpture has the power to move one to greater self-realization, to release one’s conscious mind, to engage the spiritual nature of life, to evoke a sense of eternity, and to build a deeper emotional connection within the world we live in. Through my art, I strive to capture the beauty and complexity of the world around us, drawing inspiration from nature and the human experience. My sculptures are a reflection of my passion for the creative process and my desire to share my vision with others.

This show, Clouds and Ocean, reflects my experience of living in Manzanita, Oregon. I am here every summer and in Tucson, AZ in the winter. When I’m not sculpting, I teach at the university.
