March Potters’ Nook Works by Kopali Serna

Kopali is an Otomí artist, native to Los Angeles now living in Nehalem. She first studied ceramics in high school and most recently at the Escuela Nacional de Cerámica in Jalisco, Mexico, but is mostly self-taught.

She works with clay as a way of connecting to her ancestral memories and to the elements of life – earth, water, fire, and air. Her process involves making vessels through both wheel-throwing and hand-building, often adding sculptural elements. Finished surfaces seek to reflect the inherent beauty of clay.

Kopali’s pottery is often made with the setting of the ofrenda, the offering, in mind. Whether it be for a ceremonial offering or for the daily ritual of sharing food on the home table, her pieces seek to evoke reverence for the Earth in her form of clay.

Kopali’s studio is based in Nehalem Bay Pottery, on the North Oregon Coast within the immense beauty of the Pacific Northwest rainforests.
